From "The Heights" with Love

by Ryan

Talk about Harlem and most people have some sort of knowledge about it, whether it stems from the Renaissance, Globetrotters or Dipset & the ASAP crew.  Not as many know about its bordering hood to the north, Washington Heights.  A Dominican stronghold since the 1960’s, it reps some of the best oxtail stew over rice, sidewalk Batchata, and Columbia’s School of Physicians and Surgeons.

For this latest shoot, I told the latest face of TFM, DeVante, to meet me at a very little nook of a street just inside of Washington Heights on 163rd & St. Nicholas.  Historic Slyvan Terrace was intended to be the location for the first guerilla style shoot of the fall.  Originally a carriage path leading to what many contend is the oldest house in Manhattan,  the street is cobble-stoned with 18th century style row houses. It’s gloriously out of place in the area and resembles a movie set dropped right on the side of a C-Town grocery.

TFM has much more to come this fall and winter, as we’re beefing up connections with local thrifts selling unique menswear.  This shoot features just a few appetizers to get your pallet ready.  This time we have vintage pieces from heritage brand, Woolrich, as well as some RL Polo Sport, Adidas, and some rare T-shirts from a 2014 Opening Ceremony X Area NYC collaboration (more on that collab here) that speeds up the distressing process by 20 years or something.  Hope you like the offering and if you do, act fast and grab these quick. Once they’re gone, that’s it.

I was pretty pumped to get our scene ready, when a nice lady informed us that there was a planned Alice in Wonderland play set to start within the hour and we couldn't shoot there.  Even though we wouldn’t get to have a backdrop reminiscent of The Knick, the ladywhispered something about a submerged garden on the Mansion’s premises and that it could be just as good of a location. Skeptical but open to new experiences, we obliged, said hello to a bus load of Swedish tourists and found what really was a beautifully green backdrop under a sun bobbing and weaving through clouds.  So, shout out to her.
